This year’s International Women’s Day theme ‘Give to Gain’ invites us to reflect on a powerful truth. When we give – our time, our compassion, our courage – we create space for growth – not just in others, but in ourselves.

Susanna Smith’s story embodies that belief.

An environmental psychologist and designer, Susanna’s work is grounded in neuroscience, behaviour and inclusive human-centred design. Her mission is simple but powerful – to create environments that heal, include and positively shape how we think, feel and behave.

Growing up in a turbulent home shaped by trauma, she found her safe haven at school – in the predictability of classrooms and the safety created by teachers who saw her potential. Education gave her something priceless – the feeling of belonging.

And in that belonging, she found her purpose.

Living with autoimmune conditions and as someone who is neurodivergent, Susanna understands firsthand how environments can overwhelm the nervous system, or soothe it. She knows what it feels like to move through spaces that don’t fit you. And she knows the transformation that happens when they do.

So she chose to give back.

After studying design, she dedicated 18 years to education, embedding psychologically informed practice into classrooms and leadership. She created environments where children, particularly those with SEMH and SEND needs, felt seen, safe and supported.

The results were profound – stronger communities, improved outcomes and cultures rooted in connection rather than control.

She learned something powerful along the way. That environments are never neutral. They either reinforce trauma or nurture healing.

Today, Susanna designs and consults across education, residential children’s homes, workplaces, homeless and domestic abuse housing and health sectors – transforming spaces into places of belonging.

Her philosophy challenges convention. Trauma-informed and neurodivergent design should not be a niche. It should simply be design. Because when we design with neurology, psychology and behavioural science in mind, we give people something fundamental – safety. And from safety comes growth, productivity, creativity and community.

This is where ‘Give to Gain’ becomes more than just a theme.

Susanna gave her empathy.

She gave her lived experience.

She gave her resilience forged through adversity.

And in doing so, she gained something greater than success – she gained impact.

Her leadership is rooted in authenticity and service. She prioritises people over profit. She believes nurturing others is not weakness – it is strategy.

International Women’s Day reminds us that progress is often built quietly, in classrooms, in overlooked spaces, where someone decides to lead differently.

Susanna’s story is a reminder that when women give with intention, when they design with compassion, lead with empathy and advocate for equity – everyone gains.

We gain safer schools.

We gain inclusive environments.

We gain communities built on belonging rather than barriers.

And perhaps most importantly, we gain inclusion and hope. Because sometimes the most powerful revolutions don’t start with noise. They start with a room – redesigned.

Morleys are delighted to announce our new partnership with Abodiology. We’re proud to be working alongside Susanna to create learning environments that place wellbeing, inclusion and a true sense of belonging at their heart.
