ACS Cobham is a leading international day and boarding school for students aged 2 to 18 situated in the county of Surrey. They are part of a group of four international schools known as American Community Schools, operating near the edge of Greater London. Offering a robust, international curriculum, they encourage students with how to learn, not what to learn, by providing a tailored approach and a wide range of opportunities. This allows students to pursue their individual interests and ambitions for the future so they leave ACS ready to stand out, not blend in.

Morleys were appointed to refurbish 5 x Science laboratories, an office space, a prep room and a Science flexi classroom.

Through design engagement meetings with our client Total Construction Ltd, we created 3D visual renders of how the furniture would look in situ, ensuring the learning spaces were interactive and expressive, as well as practical and functional. The colour palette reflected the school’s brand colours, with the muted natural tones creating a calm environment to aid concentration and focus.

For the Science labs we designed bespoke squiggle shaped desking to maximise the use of the space and encourage collaboration. The fitted units provided facilities for hygiene and washing equipment, as well as storage to keep work areas clean and tidy. We used Postura+ stools for student seating for their ergonomic design and durability. For the office we designed a contemporary and comfortable space using mesh back task seating and modular desking solutions.

We also installed Lego base plates to create an imaginative Lego Wall in the Science flexi room. A unique feature to fully allow students to explore and discover their creative side, living up to the school’s ethos to stand out, not blend in!

Our installation team carried out works during term time, ensuring consideration to learning schedules at all times, and avoiding disruption by completing more complex installs over weekends. Access was challenging due to the second-floor location and sloped roof. To overcome this, some items such as the fume cupboard, were dismantled to gain access and then reassembled in location.
