Established in 1963, Bishop Douglass is a Roman Catholic co-educational secondary school and sixth form located in East Finchley, within the London Borough of Barnet. The school is part of the Cardinal Hume Academies Trust.

Bishop Douglass set out to revitalise its sixth form centre, aiming to create a modern, mature environment that reflects the transition of students into young adulthood. The goal was to establish a distinctive identity for the sixth form, setting it apart from the rest of the school, while designing a space that balances connectivity and independence. The vision centred on creating a series of flexible zones, each serving a specific purpose yet seamlessly linked to support a dynamic and collaborative learning atmosphere.

Working in close partnership with Bishop Douglass School, we brought their vision for a vibrant and mature sixth form centre to life. Our collaborative design process focused on creating a dynamic, flexible environment that truly reflects the needs and aspirations of young adults preparing for their next steps.

The result is a thoughtfully zoned space that balances focus and freedom – from quiet study areas, inviting breakout and dining zones to open social spaces designed for collaboration and connection. A café-inspired aesthetic, complete with high poseur tables and stools, adds a sophisticated, ‘grown-up’ feel, while modular soft seating in the school’s signature royal blue brings warmth, continuity and flexibility.

Every detail was carefully planned to make the most of the compact footprint, ensuring smooth flow and functionality without compromising comfort. The refreshed sixth form centre now offers students a dedicated space where they can study, socialize and recharge – a place that feels distinctly their own whilst remaining part of the wider school community.
