PROJECT SCOPE
Identified by Staffordshire County Council as a high demand area for school placements following a residential development on the former Tamworth Golf Course, the new Garden Village school, constructed by G F Tomlinson and managed by the Fierté Multi-Academy Trust with Entrust Education is a two-storey school with a current capacity to accommodate 210 mainstream co-education primary pupils from Reception to Year 6 and an early years provision serving the community of Amington. The school has been designed to enable further expansion in the future as the demand for places increases. Facilities include multiple classrooms, an indoor sports hall, catering space and outdoor play areas.
How we delivered
Through design engagement meetings with project stakeholders from Staffordshire County Council, the Headteacher of Garden Village Primary and the Vice-CEO of the Fierté Multi-Academy Trust, we created a detailed schedule of furniture requirements and specifications, including the design of the library space.
We incorporated biophilic elements to create a calm and natural library space for students to relax, feel inspired, read and work together in a shared environment. A book tree and complimentary tones of green, grey and warm wood helped to achieve this with a choice of collaborative and soft seating options. To encourage the students on their literacy journey the library space opens up into the outside space, creating a free flow environment that is fully accessible, bringing the outside in and creating an immersive experience for students to enjoy reading and sharing stories with each other. The outdoor areas were designed to encourage children to explore their natural world, develop physical skills and use their imagination for open-ended play. We provided bridges, mud kitchens and to further support the joy of literacy we created reading sheds and wooden reading chairs. For the early years provision, we extended the organic elements into the learning environment using natural wooden furniture and adding pops of colour through the soft seating.
Following Government legislation that all state schools must have a defibrillator onsite, on account of the campaign by Oliver King’s parents, we provided this life-saving equipment, in addition to other medical equipment such as first aid boxes, eye wash stations and a medical fridge. We installed a folding climbing frame and staging system in the main hall.
Our in-house Project Management and Installation teams worked in partnership with Tony Hand, Vice-CEO of the Fierté MAT, and the contractor to plan a schedule of works that flexed around a live site where building works were still being carried out.
