Morleys were delighted to be awarded the FF&E design consultancy and loose furniture supply and install for a brand-new primary school constructed under the 21st Century Welsh Schools programme. It provides the local community of Pembrey with state-of-the-art facilities for pupils and staff, with a Flying Start facility accommodated within the new school building.

PROJECT SCOPE

Situated adjacent to the previous school site the new building was delivered by local contractor TRJ – T Richard Jones (Betws) Ltd. The purpose-built school includes classroom provision for children aged 3-11 years, a community Flying Start community hub, Art, Design, and Food Technology specialist areas, and a library space.

How we delivered

Working in partnership with both the school’s project team and Carmarthenshire Council, through design engagement discussions, we understood the FF&E had to support the school’s pedagogical approach to delivering the curriculum. The learning environments needed to encourage focused group work, collaboration and be accessible for all students.

We carefully thought through the colour palette, the spatial layout and the form and function of the furniture to suit the needs of pupils and staff. All classrooms face an outside area, creating a light and open feel, with biophilic elements from the natural environment bringing the outside in. We ensured the furniture aesthetics complimented this, using natural wooden tables and chairs for the early years provision, and for the main school, warm beech for classroom tables, adding pops of colour through the chairs. With 33% of pupils attending the school having additional learning needs, higher than the national average of 21%, it was important to select furniture for the Intervention rooms that supports neurodiversity, movement and cognitive development. We used curved shelving in the library space to mirror the contours of the natural environment, continuing the biophilic design elements, and to ensure we maximised storage and accessibility.
