Morleys were delighted to be awarded the FF&E design consultancy and loose furniture supply and install for a state-ofthe-art All-Through SEN school constructed by Portakabin and awarded under the Department of Education’s MMC1 framework. It was funded by the DfE following a successful bid to the Government’s free school programme by Norfolk County Council. It provides the local community of Easton with essential and high-demand specialist education provision, including medical treatment rooms and sensory spaces.

PROJECT SCOPE

Part of the Bridge Multi-Academy Trust, The Bridge Easton is a purpose-built school catering for pupils with cognition and learning needs and provides a specialist base for learners with autism. Delivered by modular building experts Portakabin, 60 custom modules were built offsite meaning installation onsite took just two weeks. The school required modern spacious classrooms, specialist therapy rooms, forest school outdoor space, a multi-surface sports area, individual outside spaces for all primary classes and a sensory garden.

How we delivered

Through design engagement discussions we worked in partnership with project stakeholders to understand the requirements of the staff and pupils, advising on the FF&E and spatial layout that would best support the school’s pedagogical approach to delivering the curriculum and create a calm and inclusive space for learners with complex needs. The learning environments encourage concentration, participation, and allow students to feel relaxed and able to interact with teaching staff and their peers.

We carefully thought through the colour palette using tranquil and muted tones of blues, greys and yellows to promote peace, focus and positivity. The spatial layout is designed to allow accessibility, and the form and function of the furniture suits the needs of pupils and staff. All classrooms are flooded with natural light, creating a feeling of open space and a connection with the natural environment, bringing the outside in. We ensured the furniture aesthetics complimented this, using natural grey chairs and warm beech hues for the classroom tables, adding pops of colour through the soft seating.

We created a specialist sensory room as a retreat for pupils with additional learning needs that supports neurodiversity, stimulation and cognitive development, and provides a safe space for students to relax and decompress.
