Founded in 1905, Tormead School places strong emphasis on personal
development, academic excellence, and a broad curriculum. Alongside rigorous classroom learning, the school offers a wide range of co-curricular activities and
actively promotes individuality, resilience, teamwork, and confidence, preparing pupils for further education and life beyond school.

For this project, Morleys delivered a full turnkey refurbishment of two Chemistry laboratories, transforming them into modern, safe, and fully compliant teaching spaces. The Chemistry preparation room was also fully redesigned and refurbished to address long-standing challenges, including insufficient storage, an undersized sink area, and a fume cupboard that was no longer fit for purpose.

In addition, the English classrooms were in need of renewal, with tired interiors
and mismatched furniture that lacked cohesion and inspiration.

The scope of works included full strip-out, new fitted furniture, upgraded mechanical and electrical services, new fume cupboards, integrated teaching technology,
and coordinated FF&E throughout.

The refurbished Chemistry laboratories now provide future-ready, high-quality environments that support practical learning and modern science education. The design moved away from dark, traditional finishes in favour of a light, contemporary aesthetic, creating an inviting and aspirational space that encourages students to pursue A-Level Chemistry.

Previously, each laboratory featured a separate teacher’s bench that restricted circulation and limited flexibility. Morleys redesigned the layout by integrating the teacher’s bench into a student bench, subtly raising it to maintain clear sightlines for demonstrations while preserving a clear distinction between teaching and student work areas.

The laboratories remained connected to the school’s legacy heating system, resulting in poor temperature control, particularly due to extensive glazing along one elevation.
To resolve this, Morleys decommissioned the existing radiators and installed new ceiling-mounted dual air-conditioning units in both laboratories, ensuring a comfortable, well-regulated environment throughout the year. Lighting was also comprehensively upgraded, eliminating previously dark areas and delivering consistent, high-quality illumination across the spaces.

By reconfiguring the layout and functionality of the Chemistry preparation room, Morleys more than doubled the available storage while significantly improving usability, safety and workflow.

The English classrooms were transformed through the replacement of outdated, mismatched furniture with a modern, coordinated fit-out. New furniture, integrated teaching walls, a matching locker system and upgraded overhead LED lighting were introduced to create calm, contemporary learning environments that support focus
and engagement.
