PROJECT SCOPE

Part of Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, the new 3-16 school in Cilfynydd is one of the exciting developments included in the £75.6m investment in education for Greater Pontypridd. It continues Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s commitment to deliver first-class education facilities right across the county.

How we delivered

Through design engagement meetings with Morgan Sindall and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, we designed and created drawings of all areas throughout the primary area of the new school to help the project stakeholder team visualise the space and form a furniture schedule of requirements.

We worked to the client’s specification to create a calm and natural environment with vibrant and fun pops of colour, creating clear and visual zones for creativity, literacy and numeracy aligned with the Curriculum for Wales. We achieved this through neutral grey tones for the desking and warm wood finishes for the fitted units, using colourful bursts of tangerine, lime and cyan for the chairs, soft seating and soft furnishings. We supplied furniture and equipment for classrooms, the Heartspace library, early years areas, offices and the main hall. We installed appropriate display boards, cloakroom benching, a folding stage and gym apparatus. In the younger pupils’ areas we ensured access to a range of sensory and imaginative play equipment including dens, play panels, kitchen role play units, sand and water play tables.

Our Project Management and Installation teams worked in partnership with the contractor to plan a schedule of works that flexed around build completion dates. We were delighted to be supported by students Jenson Williams and Harley Bowden from Llangatwg Community School in Neath, South Wales, completing work experience alongside the very experienced installation team at Celtic Furniture Installations.

Michael Lovett, Director at Celtic Furniture Installations, commented: “The boys absolutely loved working on this project and are hoping to join us on future projects. We believe it is very important to engage young people in work experiences early on to help them understand life after school.”

“From appointment Morleys were an excellent single point of contact. They held initial meetings with the client to run through requirements and make sure they had the furniture that met their needs and functions. Through the design process Morleys formed open communication channels so the client was always part of the journey. When it came to installation, Morleys delivered as they promised on a very tight programme to the highest of quality.”
